Network of European Foundations - From intercultural dialogue to interculturalism

By the end of 2008, the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, hundreds of initiatives will have taken place throughout Europe. In order to ensure that the lessons that emerge are taken forward, the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) and the European Forum for the Arts and Heritage (today Culture Action Europe) have set up the Platform for Intercultural Europe.

This brings together more than 200 civil society organizations and their members engaged in intercultural action throughout Europe – at local, national and regional levels, and in sectors including arts and culture, education and lifelong learning, youth and social affairs, human rights and minorities. European Foundation Centre - EFC focuses on fight against poverty

In 2009, the European Foundation Centre will be devoting much of its attention to an age-old issue for philanthropy: how foundations can collectively and effectively contribute to the fight against poverty. EFC has decided to make poverty the focus of its next Annual General Assembly and Conference in Rome (14-16 May 2009), where the theme will be explored in the widest sense possible. Council on Foundations - International giving by US foundations soars to over billion

International Grantmaking IV, a new Foundation Center study of international grantmaking trends commissioned by the Council on Foundations, reports that US foundations gave an estimated $5.4 billion for international purposes in 2007. Established in 1935, the California-based Rosenberg Foundation is committed to nurturing promising efforts to create a more just and economically inclusive society. It has long supported impact litigation as one of the critical tools – along with policy advocacy, organizing, and public education – to advance structural reform of public policies and private practices. The latest, and potentially most far-reaching, example is supporting Equal Rights Advocates’ (ERA) and Impact Fund’s lawsuit challenging Wal-Mart’s pay and promotion policies for its female workers in the US. Mo Ibrahim Foundation - Promoting good leadership in Africa

‘Leadership is the single most important factor in determining the future of African countries,’ said Mo Ibrahim in a recent interview for Kenya’s Nation newspaper. ‘By governing well in the interests of all their citizens, good leaders create the conditions where all the other challenges, such as health and access to water, can be tackled much more effectively.’ Established in 2006, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation aims to ‘shine a light on governance in Africa and support great African leadership’.
