December 2008: How far will they go?

How far are foundations willing to go to try to solve what they see as the most urgent problems facing the human race – whether it’s climate change or proliferation of nuclear arms or HIV/AIDS? Will they dig into corpus, increase their payout, decide to spend down, direct all their grantmaking to a single issue, take radical steps outside foundations’ conventional repertoire?
Guest editor is Diana Leat.

March 2009: The next decade of debate

This special feature will identify five topics that seem likely to dominate the next decade of debate in the field of philanthropy. We will find strong advocates to present both sides of each question. We will then invite a panel of young leaders from around the world to give their views. Guest editor is Tim Ogden.

June 2009: The role of philanthropy in state building and democracy promotion

In the run-up to the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this special feature will look at the role of philanthropy in state building and democracy promotion after the fall of a non-democratic regime. How successful have foundations efforts been? Is this an area they should get involved in? This will focus largely on Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union but also on other countries in Africa and Latin America.
